Since there is a PLUS AGENCY theme weekend my other page Style & Curve. I decided to inform on my blog about HOW TO BECOME A PLUS MODEL IN 6 STEPS.
(I refer to plus models in this article, but is also works for general models.)
1. THINK ABOUT IT FIRST!
Decide if becoming a plus model is really what you want. The life of a plus model is not always an easy life. The best thing is probably that you can see the world and that you can earn a lot of money. But traveling around the world and living a gypsy life with a family and kids at home. You will have a very busy life. A normal shooting day can also take 10 hours or more. I say this, because in a normal office job you maybe have 8 hours or less. You have fixed times and you get your breaks. If you are having a shooting you can’t always have a break when you want it. You can’t always stop when you are tired, If you are shooting for a campaign then it also has to be all perfect. You really need to want this work and you need to be a perfectionist. This means, you are never happy enough with the result. Always try to improve yourself and your work.
2, LOOK FOR PLUS MODEL AGENCIES
Best way to do this is through google. Use the words “Plus Model Agency” and your country name. Find out in which city are the most agencies. When you are living close to them go there and ask for a test shooting. If you are living far away send an application. Choose the agencies that work best for you and save the contact.
3. MAKE SURE YOU FIT THE HIGHT AND SIZE REQUIREMENTS
Plus size models are usually between size 12 – 16 (occasionally 18) and their height is usually 5’7- 5’11. 5’7 is usually the normal height if you want to get started as a plus model. Only a few agencies accept smaller models and bigger sizes. You can find out in your research which ones are best for you.

4. MAKE PICTURES FOR YOUR APPLICATION
If you think you can send your everyday pics with your family to the agencies, then you are totally wrong. Many plus model agencies got on their pages a link for applications. Look for a page “BECOME A MODEL” and follow the instructions. There you can also see example pics. Make sure you made this kind of pics. Next important thing is to NOT wear make-up. And do not hide your face behind your hair, tie your hair back.
Here are a few examples about famous models:
Here are examples of German Plussizemodel Silvana Denker:
5. WHAT KIND OF MODEL DO YOU WANT TO BE?
It might seem strange to ask yourself this when you don’t even know much about the model industry in general. But even for thinner models its important to find out what kind of models they will become later. Generally speaking, you have to decide if you want to be a High Fashion or a Commercial model. For example, thinner models can become high fashion models who would even be appearing on couture shows. Then there are the underwear or how I like to call them the “Victoria’s Secret” models. These models are not too skinny, they have breasts or a small butt and they look more sexy. Then the big range of plus models. With the right height you can be a plus model for fashion labels. In case you are too small you could also work as a commercial and print model. Everything is possible.

6. SEND YOUR APPLICATION
You made it to the last step. After all the work and research you are finally ready to send your application to the chosen agency. You can also send it to more than one agency. You also know by now what kind of model you want to be. The only think you have to do now is: WAITING!
It can take a few weeks til an agency replies so don’t worry if it takes time. And while waiting:
But if the waiting takes more than long enough….
please, come back to life.
